Your children are your most valuable treasure. You never wish them less and promise to give them all the best things in life; latest gadgets, expensive toys, private schooling, daintiest clothes… you name it. That’s how most parents define ‘best’. However, they do not realize that some of these implicitly rob them of spending quality time with their children. And the next thing they know? That the kids are all grown up, and are ready to fly on their own to live their life.
The only way to provide the ‘best’ in life is to spend time with your kids as much as you can. So, set everything aside and know how. Here are the easiest ways to do so:
1. Schedule your dates regularly!
Time is a thief; and it is difficult to find the perfect opportunity to spend moments with your child especially if you are a busy parent. However, exerting effort in planning simple dates such as: eating out, cooking together, strolling the mall, playing board games and trying new activities together will be the perfect chance for your child to look forward to spending quality time with you and enjoy it while it is happening. They will definitely feel the love and comfort that you provide and you too, will get to know their hearts better! It will be worth it.
2. Do chores together.
Chores might be a heavy job for children nowadays. Even for adults, it may seem like a big task as most people rely on appliances to clean for them. But, doing chores and teaching your kid how to do it will grant them new life skills, and will train them as to how to be tidy, and crisp when working. Not only that, you get better at working together, on top of the synergy you get to tick off the to-do list faster. A perfect way to spend time with your kids! Now, that’s a real ‘win-win’ situation right there.
3. Learn something together!
Children are so used to their parents knowing everything and being good at what they do. Sometimes, it intimidates them; one of the reasons why they refrain from opening up. It would be fun if you could learn something with your kid! Maybe go to art workshops, acting workshops, ice skating, and learn how to play instruments. These kinds of activities will be comforting for your child because they would realize that just like them, you don’t know everything and they would see how you handle new challenges and be inspired! It will boost their confidence and new skills may possibly be obtained.
4. Put the tech aside.
Technology is one of the reasons why we run out of time. And we are all so immersed with it that we forget about the most vital things. Consider a gadget time out for the family and spend the day with classic indoor and outdoor activities in order to tend to your child’s emotional needs. It may be difficult to do at first but, through time and habit it will just be a piece of cake.
5. A ‘Good morning’ and ‘Sweet dreams’ routine.
Add an extra 10 minutes to your morning routine and dedicate the first part of your day to your child. You can do stretches together or allow them to prepare breakfast with you. Also, sneak some quality time before bed too! Maybe wash your face and brush your teeth together, talk about your day, read a bedtime story or ask each other questions that you are most curious about.
Never miss another chance and spend time with your kids while time still allows you to do so. Parents help nurture various skills that children need as they grow up such as communication, reading, writing, strategy, etc. According to Neha Taparia, a lecturer of Psychology at St. Francis College for Women, Hyderabad:
“Children imitate by observing what their role models, most often parents, do. Spending quality time with them will help them learn so much,”
She also added that spending quality time with your kids helps in shaping their personality and how they treat other people.
Time is essential. Time is gold and time flies. Take every chance to spend moments with your children despite the hectic schedule to make them feel loved and important. Material things could be robbed and it can be broken, but life lessons and precious moments will forever be engraved inside your hearts forever.
