That could be more than just a missed period!
Let’s face it, a missed period is the most apparent sign of pregnancy. For those who have a regular menstrual cycle, this may be a lot helpful but how about those with irregular periods? A woman’s body goes through tons of hormonal changes during pregnancy and these also result in physical changes in one’s body.
If you know your body well, you may immediately notice these early signs of pregnancy which may indicate that a baby growing inside you. Remember these may be beneficial as they may be noticed even before one misses her period.
-
Change in the appearance and consistency of vaginal discharge
Normal vaginal discharge is usually thin or watery and clear but during early stages of pregnancy, your vaginal discharge will be a very thick and white mucus. This may have a slight smell as well. As is it thick enough, you will notice this on your underwear.
-
Breast Tenderness
As the egg is fertilized and the hormones kick in, your blood volume increases. You will have fuller breasts. It will also be sore and sensitive. This may also indicate the lactating period. This will be the same feeling that your breasts will have if you are about a week or two before your next period but in early pregnancy, this may be immediately felt during the first two weeks and will remain until the entire pregnancy stage.
-
Darkening of the Nipples and Other Parts of the Body
Not all nipples have the same color. Some may be lighter while others may be darker. Regardless of its normal color, your nipples will be darker during pregnancy. The hormones affect the cells which give color to the nipples. You may also notice some other parts of your body darkening like your neck, underarms, elbows, and knees.
-
Metallic Taste
You eat the food you want but you feel like your chewing aluminum foil with it. The metallic taste also lingers in your mouth which may sometimes cause not liking the food we usually crave for.
-
Heightened Sense of Smell
Your sense of smell will be very strong and sensitive during pregnancy to the point that you will immediately identify what’s cooking in the kitchen. I find this very beneficial for those women who have that faint sense of smell the entire time. This can be both an advantage and a disadvantage. It may increase or totally eliminate your liking for something or someone.

Unusual Food Cravings
Pregnant women are always associated with unusual food cravings. You may find a certain liking for something that you never really wanted to eat or something that you just saw on TV. Your cravings can be as unusual as wanting to eat fruits, not in season and really hard to find. Sometimes you crave it but when it’s already in front of you, you no longer want to eat it.
There may also be other early signs of pregnancy like urinating frequently, nausea, mood swings, and morning sickness. Some women may just have some of these symptoms while others may not have any, even when they are already in their first stages of pregnancy. Some of these changes may also be symptoms of another condition of the body and not pregnancy. So, if you notice some or all of these especially when you are expecting, it is always best to consult your doctor.

With my first breast tenderness was my first symptom. With my second, my face broke out horribly.
Yes to all of these! My boobs hurt so much and I was taking 3 hour naps. I knew something was going on!
These are all great signs to look out for!
I had every one of these signs but didn’t pay attention to them. My period had always been irregular but what got me is when I was in a bar, my husband ordered wine for me and I just got the feeling that I shouldn’t drink it and sure enough I was pregnant. Lol
whoah! Now that’s momma powerful instincts!
With my first the Metallic taste was a clue for me. These are all great. thanks.
Great list! Unusual food cravings were a bit for me, or rather aversions. I couldn’t stand the smell of meat and eggs for all three pregnancies! That’s my for sure sign, although I know many people don’t have to worry about food aversions or sickness.
True that. Pregnancy differs from pregnancy to pregnancy 🙂
