How to Create Your Own Riddle?

How to Create Your Own Riddle

Do the riddles available online bore you? Are you looking for something new, something fresh?

How about creating your own version of riddles for your kids?

I promise this process is going to be fun. And your kids will love to have a variation when they get to solve something that you curated just for them!

The following are steps to make you a pro at creating riddles for your little ones. And the best part?

You can create riddles about anything and everything ā€“ all on your own!

1. Read Riddles ā€“ a Lot

Before you do something, research and knowledge about it are one of the most important steps. Isnā€™t it?

The same goes for riddles too. You need to read riddles ā€“ different kinds and different levels of difficulty. This will give you an idea of how things work here.

You will get tons of books on riddles. And did you know that there is an entire chapter dedicated to riddles in The Hobbit?

2. Zero in on the Subject of the Riddle

This is the time to decide what you want as your subject of the riddle.

Now don’t stress much, as you can create a riddle about anything you can think of. But of course, if it is about some physical objects, it becomes easier for you to create oneā€”the more familiar the physical object, the more accessible.

Also, you can choose natural phenomena as your subjectā€”for example, snow and storm.

It is better to avoid complicated subjects, as that will make it difficult for you to form the riddle. And even if you succeed in doing so, your kids will find it hard to solve it. This, in turn, will make them disinterested in solving riddles.

And you donā€™t want that. Right?

3. Decide the Length of the Riddle

Riddles come in all lengths. Yes.

And so, when you decide the length of the riddle, you need to be very specific. Also, you need to remember whom you are creating the riddle for.

If your audience is only kids, you need to ensure that the length of the riddles doesnā€™t scare them. Keep it short so that your kids can follow it. Otherwise, they will find no interest in solving it.

If you are creating riddles for adults, you can make them lengthy. But then also, you have to make sure that it is not too long so that you don’t make your audience disinterested.

4. Start With the Answer

Now, this is the main trick for creating a riddle. You need to work backward. This means you need to focus on the answer first to make up your riddle,

Once you have made up your mind on that, you have to go backward and create the riddle. As I already said, choose a very common answer. This will keep your audience engaged.

Suppose the answer is some very common unhuman thing, such as a pencil. In that case, you can give them human-like qualities to confuse your audience.

5. Think How the Answer Looks Like or What It Does

Take a pen and a piece of paper and list the things that come to mind when you think of the answer.

Think of the adjectives and verbs that describe the answer well. Think about what synonyms you can apply. Write everything.

For example, if your answer is a pencil, you can list down words or phrases such as rubber, wood, pink hat (the eraser), yellow, and looks like the number 1.

There are so many other ways to describe a pencil. Just think about it, and you will surely come up with something creative.

6. Create Your Riddle

This is the time to get it all together. See what ideas you have gathered in the last step and then work on them to give them a good and interesting form.

As it is a riddle you are creating, use metaphors to describe common things in uncommon ways. And that’s the trick for creating interesting riddles.

Use simple, easy-to-understand words so your kids can quickly find the answer.

7. Personify Your Answer

Now, do you want to create a what am I riddle?

Then you need to personify your answer.

These kinds of riddles are very catchy, and kids love solving them. They sound as if they are talking about themselves.

Start your riddle with the word ā€œI,ā€ and then go on to describe what it does.

8. Read Out Loud to See How It Sounds

After all, you are going to say this riddle. Right? And so, it is important that you read it to understand how it sounds.

Riddles that have some rhyming words are good to hear and sound fun. So, you can try giving your riddle a rhyming vibe.

9. Share Your Final Riddle with Your Kids and Friends

Itā€™s showtime!

And itā€™s time to make your riddle public.

Share the riddle you just created with your kids and your loved ones. See how good they are at answering riddles.

Conclusion

Did you like the Disney riddles? Was it fun sharing them with your kids? How did your kids perform? Were the riddles easy for them to solve, or were they hard?
