The countries with the best response to coronavirus are led by women. Today, we see more and more business leadership positions being held by women, and that is a great thing. But as Marissa Orr states in her book, “Instead of encouraging women to lean into their individual strengths and celebrate the value women bring to the table, we essentially tell them to behave more like men.”
During this COVID-19 crisis, these women leaders have led with the truth, decisiveness and love.
Angela Merkel of Germany told the truth early to her citizens. Germany, with 83 million citizens, has had over 132,000 infections but very low deaths per million — far lower than most other European countries.
Clarity and decisiveness are saving New Zealand from the storm.” New Zealand is an island country of almost five million, which relies heavily on tourism. But Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern shut New Zealand’s borders to foreign visitors on March 19 and announced a four-week lockdown of the country on March 23, requiring all non-essential workers to stay at home except for grocery shopping or exercising nearby. “
Erna Solberg of Norway held a dedicated press conference (adults-free) to respond to kids’ questions from across the country, taking time to explain why it was OK to feel scared”.
Years of research have suggested that women’s leadership styles may be different and beneficial. Too many companies are still trying to get women to behave more like men if they want to lead or succeed. Yet these national leaders are case study examples of the leadership traits that men may want to learn from women. It is time we recognized this – and elected more of them.
