Father’s Day is commemorated every month of June and at this time, we show respect and honor to our dearly beloved Fathers. Biological or not, the fathers whom we have known since we were kids have been part of our being. We grow as they grow. And as they get older, they become more remarkable, no matter their ways.
Each of us is raised differently from one another by a Father; someone, whom regardless of kinship or gender, stood courageously to fulfill the responsibilities of one.
Let me start this entry with these questions:
What is a Father? Who is he? What does he do?
And since at the About Me of this blog I have also cleared it out that this site is for Dads as well, let me expound it a bit more — much more now as we celebrate Father’s Day all around the world.
Papa, Tatay, Dad, Daddy, Papi, Papu, Pops, Pa, Papay and Father
Many names, but same job description. The word Father is related to the verb “fathering” which means to treat with protective care. It means being involved, responsible, physically available, emotionally engaged, being a provider, a great source of support system and the head of the family who is given the other half of power to child raising decisions.
Some people ask, “Are fathers necessary?” Of course, yes! The father has an active role in a child’s life. A good father makes all the difference in a child’s life. He’s a pillar of support, strength and discipline. His work is endless and, oftentimes, thankless. But at the end of it all, it shows in the sound, well-adjusted children he raises.
What is a Good Father?
A good father loves his children, but he doesn’t let them get away with wrongdoings. He strongly disapproves of his children’s misdeeds, and may sometimes use tough love to prove a point. He does this through the authority of his words, telling his children gently, and not through his fists.
A good father acknowledges that his children are human and that making mistakes is part of growing up, but he doesn’t tolerate repeated irresponsible actions.
What God says about Fathers:
“Fathers,” were a God idea. We were taught that the creator of the universe is The Father, Himself. He also describes himself as Love. This describes an action, not just the feeling it defines. Love is what you do for somebody, not what you feel about them.
Countless times when a Father’s dignity is spoken in the Bible.
“As a father has compassion on his children, so the LORD has compassion on those who fear him.” – Psalm 103:13
“He will turn the hearts of the fathers to their children, and the hearts of the children to their fathers; or else I will come and strike the land with a curse.” –Â Malachi 4:6
“My son, do not despise the LORD’s discipline and do not resent his rebuke, because the LORD disciplines those he loves, as a father the son he delights in.” –Â Proverbs 3:11-12
“The man of integrity walks securely, but he who takes crooked paths will be found out.” –Â Proverbs 10:9
“Listen to your father, who gave you life, and do not despise your mother when she is old.” –Â Proverbs 23:22
“The father of a righteous man has great joy; he who has a wise son delights in him.” – Proverbs 23:24
“Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as sons. For what son is not disciplined by his father?” –Â Hebrews 12:7
“Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.” – Ephesians 6:4
“Do you know of any parent who would give his hungry child, who asked for food, a plate of rocks instead? Or when asked for a piece of fish, what parent would offer his child a snake instead? If you, imperfect as you are, know how to lovingly take care of your children and give them what’s best, how much more ready is your heavenly Father to give wonderful gifts to those who ask him?” – Matthew 7:9-11
“My child, when the Lord God speaks to you, never take his words lightly, and never be upset when he corrects you. For the Father’s discipline comes only from his passionate love and pleasure for you. Even when it seems like his correction is harsh, it’s still better than any father on earth gives to his child.” – Proverbs 3:11-12Â
“The same way a loving father feels toward his children—that’s but a sample of your tender feelings toward us, your beloved children, who live in awe of you.” – Psalm 103:13
If you are a father, take what God’s Word teaches and make that your vision for Fatherhood. God has perfectly set the standard for you to embody.
According to studies,  children who are well-bonded and loved by involved fathers, tend to have less behavioral problems and are less likely to be inculpated with drug or alcohol abuse. Research indicates that fathers are as important as mothers in their respective roles as caregivers, financial providers, protectors, and most importantly, role models for emotional and social behavior.
A good father leads by example.
In a simple representation, it’s saying: He will not smoke if he doesn’t want his kids to do the same way, and definitely won’t drink heavily if he doesn’t want his kids to behave the same. He teaches them to deal with arising conflict with another member of the family or with others by being firm but reasonable at the same time.
THIS IS IMPORTANT:
A good father also illustrates the importance of love and affection by professing his love for their mother in front of them. Not fighting with her in their presence is one best way to show it. That means he adheres to the values he’d like his children to follow.
Furthermore, a father spends quality time with his family by inviting them to fun activities like taking them out to games, movies, and supporting their sports teams by attending their matches. He spends a substantial amount of time to listen to his kids and have a good, smooth chitchat session with them. He also makes time to help them with their homework and other school activities and supports them in their endeavors.
Let us greet all the Fathers in the whole wide universe a resounding
HAPPY FATHER’S DAY!
It is important to recognize and reward our dearest fathers for being there and actively teaching important life skills to our children. It is important to their children, and meaningful to fathers everywhere when we say “Thank you so much for being such a great dad!” and “I love you so much!”. After all, this is what makes life worth living.
Oooops! But if you didn’t have a father around or if you’re a single mother, DON’T BE SORRY! Keep in your heart and mind that:
God promises to be a father to the fatherless (Psalm 68:5) and He has a great plan for you and your family!
